  • It is an enhancement of the UMTS cellular system that provides high data rates and great levels of spectral efficiency.
  • It increases the UMTS system capability in features like VOIP, video conferencing, upload/download streaming services, etc.

  • The data rates increase is 5.8 Mbps (uplink) and 14 Mbps (downlink) i.e. it is 5 times capacity in downlink and twice the capacity in the downlink.
  • HSPA provides two major advancements in the uplink and downlink direction. In the uplink direction, it is called HSUPA (High Speed Uplink Packet Access) and in the downlink, it is called HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access).
  • HSPA is deployed on the WCDMA network.

HSPA provides the following advantages when used indoors through a Distributed Antenna System (DAS):

(i) Less production cost per Mb - In comparison to UMTS and EDGE data services, the production cost on HSPA is less, thereby increasing the business for customers.

(ii) Easy to connect: The users do not need to check Wi-Fi and connect. Automatic algorithms are provided that allow the users to "Click and connect".

(iii) Use of high order modulation: 16 QAM is used in downlink allowing data to be transmitted at high rates with the maximum data rate of 14.4 Mbps.

(iv) Use of link adaption: The channel usage can be maximized by adapting the link.

(v) Node B based hybrid ARQ: It allows the HSPA system to provide reduced retransmission round trip times.

(vi) Better service: The HSPA users have seamless coverage. The users can roam from the outdoor network to the indoor distributed antenna system will full service.

(vii) Seamless billing: Users can obtain billing through a normal mobile subscription, user does not have to buy Wi-Fi service subscription from service providers.

(viii) Better than WiFi- HSPA with indoor DAS provides a good performance than WiFi.  The DAS provides HSPA service throughout the building with a high data rate using indoor DAS.
