The above image shows the UMTS network architecture.

As shown in the image UMTS uses some elements of the GSM architecture. The mobile station (MS) is called user equipment (UE). The function of MSC is the same as that in GSM.

SGSN is added as a new element. It supports data rates up to 2 Mbps. The core network elements are connected to the radio network through Iu interface.

The Radio Access Network (RAN) is called a terrestrial RAN (UTRAN): Iur interface connects Radio Network Controllers (RNCs).

The base stations are connected to RNC through the Iub interface.
