AMD Hits $1 Trillion Milestone as AI Stock Rally Gains Momentum

AMD stock milestone as AI-driven semiconductor rally pushes shares higher
AMD reaches a major market milestone as investor enthusiasm for AI and semiconductor stocks continues to drive the rally.

Advanced Micro Devices has crossed a major financial milestone, briefly surpassing a $1 trillion market capitalization for the first time as investors continue to pour money into companies positioned to benefit from artificial intelligence. AMD shares climbed sharply to a record level on September 21, extending a powerful 2026 rally and reinforcing the growing importance of AI infrastructure in the semiconductor market.

The move puts AMD in a small group of U.S. chipmakers valued at more than $1 trillion and comes as semiconductor stocks broadly advance.

AMD breaks into the trillion-dollar club

AMD shares rose as much as roughly 10% during Monday's session, reaching about $613.50 and pushing the company's market value above the $1 trillion threshold. Reuters reported that the stock was last up 9.6% at $613.31, a record high at the time of its report.

The milestone makes AMD the fourth U.S. chipmaker to reach a $1 trillion valuation, following Nvidia, Broadcom and Micron. Nvidia crossed the threshold in 2023 and has since grown into a company valued at several trillion dollars.

AI demand is reshaping AMD's growth story

AMD has increasingly positioned itself as a major supplier of computing hardware for artificial intelligence workloads.

Its portfolio includes graphics processors used for AI computing as well as central processing units that power data-center servers. The company has also been expanding beyond individual chips toward complete AI systems that combine processors, networking and other hardware.

That broader strategy matters because AI companies and cloud providers are investing heavily in data-center infrastructure. As AI models become more computationally demanding, demand has expanded across multiple layers of the technology stack rather than being limited to a single type of processor.

AMD has also benefited from demand for server CPUs, where it has gained market share from Intel, according to Reuters.

Semiconductor stocks rally alongside AMD

AMD's surge was part of a wider move across chip and AI-related stocks.

Intel gained roughly 12% during Monday's trading, while Qualcomm also advanced and the broader semiconductor index climbed more than 2%. The rally suggests that investor interest was not limited to AMD alone, with several semiconductor companies benefiting from renewed enthusiasm surrounding AI infrastructure.

Other market factors also supported the broader technology rally. Falling oil prices and lower Treasury yields helped improve sentiment toward growth-oriented stocks, while investors were also watching developments surrounding upcoming U.S.-China discussions.

AMD's remarkable 2026 performance

The $1 trillion milestone represents a dramatic change in AMD's market value.

According to Reuters, AMD's stock has gained about 185% in 2026, substantially exceeding the Nasdaq's roughly 15.8% advance over the same period. That performance has placed AMD among the strongest performers in the S&P 500 this year.

The scale of the rally also means expectations surrounding the company have risen considerably. AMD recently forecast quarterly revenue above Wall Street expectations, although the company has faced investor expectations that are particularly high because of the strength of the AI market.

A bigger test for the AI trade

AMD's milestone comes at a time when investors are closely examining whether enormous spending on AI infrastructure can continue to translate into sustained business growth.

For AMD, the opportunity extends beyond selling GPUs. Its ability to supply CPUs, accelerators, networking components and complete systems gives the company several ways to participate in the expansion of AI data centers.

At the same time, the stock's rapid rise has lifted its valuation. Reuters reported that AMD was trading at around 41 times forward earnings, compared with its own 10-year average of about 44 times and a substantially lower recent forward multiple for Nvidia.

AMD's passage through the $1 trillion mark therefore represents more than a round-number valuation milestone. It reflects how strongly investors are connecting the company's future growth prospects with the continuing expansion of artificial intelligence—and how important semiconductor infrastructure has become to that investment story.
